Since its founding in 1871, the Athens Conservatoire is one of the leading performing arts institutions in Greece.
Internationally acclaimed artists have graced the Conservatoire’s Music and Drama Schools, either as students or as members of the faculty, including Spyros Samaras, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Nikos Skalkottas, Maria Callas, Gina Bachauer, Alexandra Trianti, Mikis Theodorakis, Loukas Karytinos, Dimitris Sgouros, Emilios Veakis, Dimitris Rontiris, Kostas Mousouris, and Dimitris Myrat. Recent years have seen the addition of a Dance School. Due to its rich history, the research centre of the Conservatoire is a vital source of information regarding the history of Athenian music and theatre.
The Conservatoire is housed inside an iconic building by architect Ioannis Despotopoulos, a student of Walter Gropius in Weimar. The building is the only part of the ambitious planned Cultural Centre of Athens that was ever actually built. The plans for this project won first prize at a 1959 national competition. The Conservatoire building is a prominent example of the Bauhaus movement. Nowadays, the Athens Conservatoire has taken great pains to ensure that the building – listed as a Modern Monument by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture – will be finally completed and will be a testament to the architectural and cultural heritage of Athens.
Thanks to the collaboration and support of institutions such as NEON and the Friends of Aliki Vatikioti Foundation for Music and the Arts, which have contributed to the renovation of several halls, the Athens Conservatoire is a major cultural centre at the heart of Athens. Numerous international events – such as documenta 14 –, avantgarde art exhibition, concerts and other cultural events have been held at its premises.
Utilizing its excellent human resources, the Athens Conservatoire contributes to and participates in various artistic events and projects, including theatrical productions, music events, workshops, and conferences.
