Ali Akbar Moradi
It is said that Ali Akbar Moradi, one of the greatest virtuosos of the three-string tanbur (lute) working today, “drips not with sweat, but with music”. Raised in the Sufi circles of the Goran region in Iranian Kurdistan, he dedicated himself to the sacred tanbur, an instrument that embodies the culture, history and mythology of the Ahl-e Haqq religion, which developed out of Zoroastrianism. Moradi gives concerts across the world, working with leading lights of Iranian classical music; however, both the ritual and the cosmic aspects of his music find their most perfect expression when he performs with his two sons – Kouros, who lives in the USA, and Arash, who lives in the UK. Moradi’s tonbak (goblet drum), daf (frame drum) and tanbur tell of life’s oldest and most relevant concern: the freedom of the soul. And in the censorial Iran of today, such a concern is a matter of life and death for its musicians.
