This time round, Medea – the infanticide sorceress, daughter of Aeëtes  and granddaughter of the god Helios, a figure identified with passion, betrayal and revenge – speaks Albanian.


Atelier 31 and the Embassy of Greece in Albania – Press and Communications Office present the savage heroine of Euripides’ Medea, a work which, in 431 BC, on the eve of the Peloponnesian War, dared to condemn male infidelity and the lower social status of women (“athliotata fyta” – “most wretched creatures”). It is first production of the play to have been staged in neighbouring Albania.


The work is directed by the 26-year-old Mikel Karemi, who completed his studies at the Tirana Arts Academy. The director presents a stylised, ceremonial Medea, which draws upon traditional elements of his homeland.


In an attempt to further embrace multi-cultural Athens, the Hellenic Festival invites Greeks and non-Greeks to watch this production.
