Elvis Costello – Allen Toussaint Band & Horns
featuring Steve Nieve
It was Hurricane Katrina, which swept death and destruction through New Orleans in 2005, that brought Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint together again. Having teamed up in the past, the two men took part in various charity concerts together in New York in order to raise money for the hurricane victims. Toussaint, a songwriter, musician and pianist closely identified with the city of New Orleans, was himself a victim of the hurricane, losing his home and personal archive. Costello, a British musician who has moved between pub rock, pop, jazz and symphonic music, could not stand by and do nothing in the face of such devastation. The result of their collaboration was the album The River in Reverse, one of the best R'n'B albums to have been recorded in recent times.
Costello, already one of the biggest names in music since the 1980s, saw his career reach new heights in the wake of this album. He sings on almost all the songs, wrote all the lyrics, and co-wrote the music with Toussaint. “This was a chance to make something positive out of something dispiriting,” he says. “It’s also forward looking.”
