Greek National Opera - Loukas Karytinos - Renata Scotto
Turandot
by Giacomo Puccini
The mythical Chinese princess Turandot is haughty, beautiful and chaste, and will remain that way unless a suitor can be found to solve the three riddles with which, Sphinx-like, she has kept the world at bay; for any man who accepts the challenge and fails pays with his head. The land remains in the grip of fear until a stranger appears: a courageous prince determined to make the beautiful maid his bride.
- Turandot is Giacomo Puccini’s last opera. Written between the wars, it is a paragon of musico-dramatic economy and a 20th-century masterpiece. It has everything: a fairytale atmosphere, romance, powerful emotion, suspense, drama, horror and… a happy end. Of course, it also has breathtaking music which combines the exoticism of its subject-matter with Puccini’s unique lyricism and the Modernism of the age [N.A.D.].
