The Amphi-Theatre returns to Epidaurus with Phoenician Women (c. 409 BC), a tragedy only rarely performed at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus. In his interpretation of Euripides’ take on Seven Against Thebes, the director and academic Spyros Evangelatos treats the work as “a portrait gallery featuring every character from the Theban cycle”. The Levantine chorus of Phoenician ‘immigrants’ in Thebes gives the production a contemporary relevance as well as a “particular charm”.

The fate of the royal house of the Labdacids is sealed when the duel between Eteocles and Polyneices ends in both dying by their brother’s hand. Written at the height of the Peloponnesian War, the work cries out against civil strife.

The tragic role of Jocasta, who falls on her two sons’ sword, is played by Antigoni Valakou. [R.D.]
