Molière, The Imaginary Invalid
The ultimate “athlete” of the stage, Molière himself was performing his “imaginary invalid” – his swan song – when, on 17 February 1673, at the fourth performance, he concealed his bloody bout of consumption with a laugh only to collapse after the final curtain. He died at home a few hours later.
In this play, the great classic of French comedy targets hypochondria and the pompousness of doctors, superstition, quacks and greed, while one can also catch a glimpse of the terror of death.
Giannis Bezos, one of Greece’s most popular comedians, performs the hypochondriac Argan at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
