A master in the art of disguise, Olivier Py dresses up as a woman and treads the boards of the music-theatre stage.
The French actor and director does not approach transvestism as a matter of gender and sexual liberation but as a strictly theatrical act, a convention that glorifies post-theatricality to allow for a meaningful illumination of the art’s central ‘conceit’ – a carnival element that is increasingly missing from contemporary theatre. In his own words: “What’s important is not a redefinition of the freedoms of the body. What’s important is the redefinition of theatre.”
