A Tribute to Yannis Ritsos
Works by Mikis Theodorakis
Yannis Ritsos’ poems reached a mass audience when they were set to music by Mikis Theodorakis; as songs they were to serve as a fount of collective solace for millions of Greeks both within and without their native land. On June 10, 2009, the Mikis Theodorakis Popular Orchestra will be performing the three pinnacles of this collaboration at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus—Epitaphios (=“Funeral Lament - Athens, 1960), Romiosyni (= Greecity - Athens, 1966) and Eighteen Short Songs of the Bitter Fatherland -Paris, 1973).
