Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet
8 Winds
The ancient sound of the lyre in an encounter with jazz and contemporary music
Sokratis Sinopoulos’ melodies weave in and out of the quartet’s improvisations to create a uniquely eclectic sound. When they started out back in 2011, the quartet worked on adaptations of traditional Greek music but they quickly moved on to original works by Sokratis Sinopoulos. This material was recorded and released by ECM Records as Eight Winds (ECM 2407), which was produced by Manfred Eicher.
“They’re black and white musical sketches which we colour differently each time”, Sinopoulos notes. “In a way, the album’s title captures both our musical technique and our aesthetic approach: if the eight winds symbolize various musical styles and trends, then the point is not to let yourself get carried far away—however attractive and adventurous that may be—, but rather to remain where you are and feel the winds hit you in your own way”.
