Ioanna Papantoniou

Stage and costume designer, Honorary Doctor of the Department of History and Archaeology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Ioanna Papantoniou has worked with leading directors in state-run theatres and with independent companies. From 1956 to 1976 she was engaged in field research for costume studies. In 1974 she founded the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation (1981 European Museum of the Year Main Award). In 1981 she was honoured by the Academy of Athens for services to scholarship and the theatre.
She has taught in the Theatre Studies Departments of the Universities of Athens, Patras and the Peloponnese. In 2000 she was awarded the Gold Cross of the Order of the Phoenix by the President of Greece. In 2004 the Hellenic Centre for Theatrical Research awarded her the Panos Aravantinos Prize for her lifetime achievement in the theatre and in stage design. In 2013 she became the first winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award newly instituted by the European Museum Academy (ΕΜΑ).
