There can be no doubt that Verdi’s opera is performed now more often than Shakespeare’s play. If this tale of the extremes of erotic jealousy often fails to convince in the theatre, on the operatic stage the music plays a condensing, decoding, interpretive role. Set between his innocent beloved and the conniving Iago, the work’s hero comes across as out of control; as a man who has abandoned himself to passions from which no one can escape.
