Participating in the Ministry of Culture initiative “We Stay at Home with Culture”, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival continues to share standout moments from its long history, offering online streaming of performances and concerts, selected from its rich archive. Audiences at home warmly received our three previous online premieres, namely Sophocles’ Antigone, directed by Lefteris Voyatzis (2006 & 2007), Dimitris Dimitriadis’ Insenso, directed by Michail Marmarinos (2012 & 2013) and Euripides’ Electra / Orestes by the Comédie-Française company, directed by Ivo van Hove (2019). This Saturday, 16^th May, the Festival invites audiences to enjoy Aeschylus’ Oresteia, directed by Yannis Houvardas (2016).

In Yannis Houvardas’ production, one of the most sharply modern takes on ancient Greek tragedy in recent years, featuring a stellar cast, the tragic myth of the House of Atreus, spanning a period from the fall of Troy to the foundation of Areopagus, echoes the history of the modern Greek state. Twelve outstanding actors share all the roles between them, the Chorus included, in all three parts of the trilogy. The cast conveys the bloody, violent dynamics of a family as the vicious circle of an entire nation compelled to sacrifice its own children in the hopes of being reborn. However, a kind of rebirth that is based on sociopolitical visions lacking the fertilising powers and blessing of family love does not necessarily equal redemption.

Oresteia, directed by Yannis Houvardas, will be streamed on Saturday, 16 May 2020, at 19:00, through our official YouTube channel, Greek Festival, where it will remain available for free streaming strictly for 24 hours.
