Ensemble intercontemporain
This renowned French ensemble, which recently celebrated its thirtieth year of activity, and which performs under the fresh conduction of the talented Susanna Mälkki, will be filling Athens with sharp, percussive sounds. Bestriding almost 100 years of avant-garde music, the concert programme begins with two lively works that brim with energy, both written at critical moments for the composers themselves and for Europe in general: the piano duet En blanc et noir by the great Debussy (written half-way through the First World War) and the electrifying Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion by the pioneering Hungarian composer Béla Bartók (written in America, on the eve of the Second World War). The programme is brought to a close by one of the most accessible and popular works of Pierre Boulez (the founder of the ensemble), a study on material drawn from his past work Incises.
