A Tribute to Djalaleddine Roumi (Mevlana)

Istanbul Music and Sema Group

As part of this year’s international celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the birth of the poet and mystic Mevlânâ Celâleddin Mehmed Rumi, the spiritual father of the Mevlevi Sufi order, the Athens Festival has invited a group that has faithfully followed the essence of his philosophy for many years now to peform a symbolic initiation ceremony. Three complementary elements – poetry, music and ritual – are brought together in this act of reverence known as the sema, which is performed by Whirling Dervishes to activate the mind, the spirit, and the expression of love, as set out in the teachings of Mevlânâ. The message of fellowship, tolerance and love runs through the entire performance, in which the poetry of Rumi, at once erotic and spiritual, gives way to classical Ottoman music, which accompanies the awakening of life expressed by the Whirling Dervishes. In the end, eyes, ears and the soul become one.
