24 Greek Dances for the Benaki Museum, opus 57
by Filippos Tsalahouris

24 Greek dances for the Benaki Museum was commissioned by the Museum and its director, Angelos Delivorias. The Benaki Museum holds and displays one of the complete manuscripts of Nikos Skalkotas’ 36 Greek dances, and the new pieces were commissioned to mark the 100th anniversary of the great Greek composer’s birth.

The new collection travels to, and draws motifs from, parts of the Greek world not included in Skalkotas’ work, including Asia Minor, Cyprus, Southern Italy, Thrace and the Dodecanese. Greek folk dances rub shoulders with dances from other European traditions, while pieces like Dance in the Hadjidakis style or Dance of childhood memories belong to an abstract and elusive landscape. The collection is held together by extracts from the poetry of Kostas Krystallis, Giorgos Sarantaris and Kostis Palamas. With the rhythm chart open before us, we embark on a new journey as the 21st century gets underway…
