Aynur in Concert

The rich music traditions of Kurdistan have found a fresh champion in Aynur, who uses her impressive voice and formidable artistic presence to express these classic forms in an intensely contemporary, charismatic and beautiful way. Her 2004 album Keçe Kurdan (“Kurdish Girl”), and her appearance in Fatih Akın’s documentary Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of the City the following year, beguiled even those usually wary of such music; people simply did not expect to hear the traditional songs of Kurdistan rendered with a sensibility and musicality of such modernity. Aynur offers a fresh take on the material, placing traditional music within a contemporary sound setting, and highlighting a long-forgotten truth: since traditional works draw their inspiration from nature, only a performance that channels the beauty and power of nature can truly move an audience, and thus break down all barriers erected by language and nationality.
