Bartók Quartet

Χωρίς Τίτλο

The six string quartets written by Béla Bartόk (1881-1945) combine humour with despair, beauty and intense Hungarian colour. And though the celebrated Bartόk ensemble who will be playing this programme dedicated to the great Hungarian composer was founded over half a century ago, it has retained its youthful vigour intact. The three-movement String Quartet no. 1, which was inspired in part by the composer’s unrequited love for the cellist, Stefi Geyer, is played without pauses between its Lento, Allegretto and Allegro vivace sections. Harmonically more ‘vicissitudinous’, String Quartet no. 3, the shortest of the six Bartόk has composed, is also played without breaks. String Quartet no.5, which has five movements, is especially fascinating from a structural point of view. [Ι.Μ.Τ.]
