The Peony Pavilion, a showcase saga from the Kunqu opera, which flourished in China during the 16th century, is to receive its Athens premiere in a new, contemporary version by Kenneth Pai. The most popular play of the Ming dynasty, the work impresses with the poetic grace of its text, its powerful plot, outstanding music and exquisite costumes. Mirroring Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the two young lovers, paragons of undying love, transcend the social conventions of the era with the intensity of their feelings. Against a backdrop of dark waters and snow-covered mountains, the two leads succeed, with the help of another 64 actors, musicians and acrobats, to rekindle the public’s love of this most ancient and noble form of Chinese theatre; the traditional opera hailed by critics around the world as “a masterpiece of delicate beauty” [Y.P.].
