Les Arts Florissants and their charismatic conductor, William Christie return to the Athens Festival with the landmark Haydn work, The Creation. Written between 1796 and 1798 with a libretto by baron van Svieten (based on the John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost and the Book of Genesis), the work oratorio feauturing talented young soloists, chorus and orchestra of Les Arts Florissants, conducted by an inspired conductor, the concert will reveal new facets of this suberb choral fresco which is as fresh and charming today as it was when first performed over 200 years ago. With this work Haydn, a true disciple of the Enlightenment, not only brought the German oratorio into being, but also moreover showed that humankind can tame the chaotic forces of nature with music.
