Lyon National Opera

Benjamin Britten, Curlew river

An unexpected clash between East and West, a fragile opera and chamber music hybrid, an unholy marriage of spirituality and sensuality... The National Opera of Lyon presents us with the first (and best known) of the three Church Parables – among the most unique lyrical works of the last half century – by the British composer, Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). A ‘Christianized’ reworking of one of the best-known dramas in the Noh repertory, Curlew River grew out of the composer’s rousing contact with Japanese culture and remains an unusually intense musico-theatrical experience. The ambiguous (Catholic) Olivier Py directs the ritualistic drama by the (Anglican) Britten with its all-male cast in an audacious production which has been dividing European audiences since it was premièred at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2005 [Kh.G.]
