The Festival’s tribute to the string quartet continues with a concert by the New Hellenic Quartet. Centering on the six quartets composed by Béla Bartόk (1881-1945) – perhaps the most important body of work by the Hungarian composer, pianist and early ethnomusicologist – the programmes provide an overview of 20th-century string quartet music. Bartόk’s three-movement String Quartet no. 3 in A minor reveals the influence of Debussy, whom its composer especially admired. Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949), a symbol of Greek national music, is represented with his String Quartet no. 3. The New Greek Quartet has also included in their programme the second of the three string quartets composed by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), a piece representative of developments in his compositional style.
