Songs for Maria Farantouri

The tragic end of love

Love Ends Tragically, in the first part of this recital, at least. The lyrics are by Agathi Dimitrouka, who found inspiration in the tragic end or unfulfilled love of couples from Greek mythology: Orpheus and Eurydice, Jason and Medea, Haimon and Antigone, Pyramus and Thisbe, Leander and Hero. The music is by George Emmanuel Lazaridis, who, having astounded audiences as a pianist, is now astonishing them as a seasoned composer. In the second part, Maria Farantouri will reunite fragmented time with her art by singing Dark Mother: this is a cycle of songs written for her voice by Manos Hadjidakis in 1985-86 with lyrics by Nikos Gatsos, which she only sung at a handful of concerts in 1987. Lazaridis, a musician  profoundly influenced by both the music and the personality of Hadjidakis, has undertaken to direct this new production of Dark Mother – with Maria Farantouri at the microphone, naturally [A.D.].
