The multifaceted Camerata has always been groundbreaking and eclectic in its choice of repertoire. Continuing its policy of exploring unexpected genres, the ensemble has mined the rich tradition of Greek operetta and come up with a gem: Sakellaridis’ masterful The Godson. This daring reading from the award-winning Giorgos Petrou employs the original 1918 orchestration and an experienced cast of soloists to restore the musical dignity of a work that has suffered much from half-baked ‘nostalgic’ misinterpretations. Here is the most popular Greek operetta of all dusted off for a new generation of concert-goers.
