I Want a Country, by Andreas Flourakis
A crowd of young people climb up on stage, each with the same imperative demand: “I want a country.” Trapped in the malaise of crisis, the youth of Greece lay out a manifesto of yearning for their homeland. Scattered phrases from everyday life plot the map of our national dream. Absent the devices of scene and plot, without conventional dialogue and characters, Andreas Flourakis’ new work calls into question theatrical form as he attempts dramatically to bridge the gap between having and wanting a country.
