“The first free Parliament of the Ionian Islands declares that it is the unanimous, firm and resolute desire of the Ionian people to acquire their independence and unite with the rest of their Nation, the liberated Greece.” One hundred and fifty years on from this most exultant of declarations, a festive concert celebrates the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece. A large choir made up of singers from the Ionian Islands and Athens, seven opera singers and the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra play extracts from works by the most celebrated representatives of the Ionian School: Pavlos Carrer, Dionysios Lavrangas and Spyridon Samaras, along with the Hymn to Liberty, which was set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros.
