Jiři Kylián

East Shadow

Trends come and go, but the oeuvre of Jiři Kylián, a significant artist with a metaphysical bent, would seem to transcend them. More than 90 choreographies bare his signature – works in which he treats the body as a tool for exploring the most extreme regions of the human soul. He is graced with an irresistible charm and is genuinely unique and beyond categorizations. This year, he returns to the Athens Festival with a new creation inspired by Beckett and his Theatre of the Absurd in which he puts elderly dancers on stage. East Shadow, a tragicomedy about the absurdity of the human condition, premiered in Japan in the shadow of the incalculable devastation wrought at Fukushima in 2011.
