Veteran conductor Yuri Temirkanov owes his place among the world’s top conductors to his ability to play on an audience’s heart strings, to his unique interpretative abilities and, above all, to his influence on the players in the orchestra. His triumph at the former Soviet Union’s National Competition for Conductors in 1966 marked a turning point in his career, transforming a candidate for a teaching job at what was then the Leningrad Conservatory overnight into one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. He has worked with key orchestras in Europe and the US, though the lion’s share of his energies continues to be channelled into the historic Saint Petersburg Philharmonic whose music director and principal conductor he has been for almost twenty years. At the renowned Piano Concerto No. 1 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the piano solo is performed by Dimitris Sgouros, for whom 2007 represents his thirtieth consecutive year on the international stage.
