Stamatis Kraounakis
Those that burned the stage
Now that’s what you call rock ‘n’ roll: turning the whole Herodeion into a stage and putting all the songs that brought the house down – everything from Attic comedy to variety, and comic reviews to contemporary music theatre – up on it. More than any other Greek composer at work today, Stamatis Kraounakis combines music and theatre. Composing what are essentially song-roles, he alternates his heroes’ masks, writes fully rounded characters, and... puts “a fish’s soul in a cat’s body”. In place of a chorus, the Speira Speira Music Theatre Company frames the performers who, representing the cream of Greece’s singers and actors, range from the music hall generation of yesteryear to the leading lights of the “Free Theatre”. Every era in Greek theatrical song united into one, in a production that will certainly burn the house down! [Ν.Μ.]
