The enfant terrible of the Polish theatre, Krzysztof Warlikowski, the winner of this year’s European Theatre Prize, visits Athens for the first time. Directing the avant-garde TR Warszawa company in Krum (1975) by Hanoch Levin (1943-1999), he invests the minutiae of the everyday life presented by the Israeli author with the stature of a classic work. Like the lead in a contemporary version of the parable of the prodigal son, Krum—dressed in black cowboy suit, shoes, hat and tie—returns home and concedes defeat. Trapped in a smalltown paralyzed in its endless cycle of births, weddings and funerals, Krum watches his ambitions and fears played out on stage as though in a dream. The performance begins at the end with caption on the big white screen: “Your mother died two hours ago”. [D.K.]
