In the Penal Colony
by Franz Kafka

In the year 1914, as the flames of the Great War raged, Franz Kafka penned a nightmare under the title In the penal colony. In time, the short work would be considered prophetic of horrors to come, since the tale it tells takes place in a penal colony of an unspecified time. The Convict, who does not even know what crime he has committed or what he has been sentenced to, is inserted into an instrument of torture which inscribes on his body unto death the law that has been broken. The regime that has imposed this punishment slowly dies and is replaced with another which, though it presents a more humane face, is just as barbarous.
Savvas Stroumbos and his company take a fresh approach to Kafka’s text as they pursue the study “of the dehumanization of contemporary man” in the penal colonies of the 21st century.
