Frankfurt Schauspiel - Karin Neuhäuser

Oresteia
by Aeschylus

Karin Neuhäuser’s approach to the Oresteia combines aspects of modern day life with reminiscences of Germany’s recent history. With her small cast - each actor is playing various roles - she illustrates the transition of a world of revenge and vigilante justice to the establishment of a system of law and democracy.

The production was enthusiastically received by German audience with standing ovations for crew and cast on the first night. Press reviews praised the very special lucidity and profoundness of a tremendous Clytemnestra played by Friederike Kammer and the exceptional skills of the actors in their different roles. The chorus of Agamemnon – three coephori and 20 children - and the imaginative and spectacular set were also mentioned as outstanding.

Karin Neuhäuser began her career as an acclaimed actress on stage and screen. She has worked with the most important directors in German theatre (Frank Castorf and Christoph Marthaler among others) and recently performed as Mrs. Peachum in schauspielfrankfurt’s production of Bertolt Brecht’s Dreigroschenoper.

She started directing in 2001: Euripides’ Medea, Schiller’s Maria Stuart and Chekhov's Three Sisters to name a few.

With enormous success she directed at schauspielfrankfurt Nathan der Weise, a German classic work by Lessing, which is in the repertoire since 2004.

schauspielfrankfurt is the city’s Municipal Theatre, one of the oldest in Europe inaugurated in 1782. In 1822 it moved to the site where it is still situated on Willy-Brandt-Platz, housing stages for theatre and opera performances. The original building was destroyed in Word War II and rebuilt thereafter. After a fire destroyed the opera venue in 1987 the building was restored by a modern steel frame construction and the entire complex was completely renovated. The new venue opened its doors in 1992.

schauspielfrankfurt is renowned for its contemporary productions of classic works and the promotion of young playwrights.
