Paolo Conte in concert
Χωρίς Τίτλο
The Italian singer-songwriter’s concert appearances are few and far between, and much anticipated as a consequence. Paolo Conte is an artist who has always charted his own course. Having left the Law for the flourishing Italian music scene in the late Sixties, he established himself in his new career by preserving untouched the particular nature of his songs, and by retaining his artistic independence. Far removed from fashions and trends, and performing in a rasping whisper, he has always been an interpreter rather than a ‘proper’ singer. And though Italy is awash with songwriters, Conte has been a central figure among them down the decades by remaining true to an aesthetic rooted in classic forms: the long Italian melodic tradition and the traditional performance practices of jazz. That his songs are to be performed by a symphony orchestra does not, of course, make him part of the classical tradition; rather, it secures his place in the pantheon of classic musicians. [L.Α.]
