Ιnaugurated in December 2010, the Onassis Cultural Centre is Athens’ new cultural space hosting events and actions across the whole spectrum of the arts from theatre, dance, music and the visual arts to the written word, with an emphasis on contemporary cultural expression, on supporting Greek artists, on cultivating international collaborations and on educating children and people of all ages through life-long learning.
The architectural design chosen out of 66 proposals from around the world was that of the French architectural practice “Architecture Studio”. The foundations of the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens were laid in 2000 and its construction was exclusively funded and overseen by the Onassis Foundation. The Onassis Cultural Centre constitutes an excellent sample of contemporary architecture, monumental although simple.
A new architectural study was drawn up for the interior of the two amphitheatres by architect Mark Foley. The theatre lighting in both auditoria was designed by James Morse from the London-based ‘Light & Design Associates’ company, while the architectural lighting for the entire building was redesigned by Eleftheria Deko & Associates. Artist Aemilia Papafilippou redesigned the ground-floor bar around an original artwork.
The Onassis Cultural Centre’s 18,000 sq. m. of internal floor space are spread over no fewer than sixteen levels, nine of which are underground.
