The Charm of Kun Opera
The origins, development, musical instruments and characteristics of Kun Opera
Kun Opera (also known as Kunqu Opera) is one of the oldest forms of opera in China. Spanning a history of over 600 years, it emerged in the Kunshan region at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and was reformed during the middle period of the Ming Dynasty.
Renowned for its charming music and its rising and falling melodies, the Kun Opera is also famous for its elegant, lingering, and touching tunes. In terms of performing techniques, it focuses on control of voice, rapid and slow pause, and transition in rhythm, speed, and pronunciation. The Opera incorporates poems, music, songs, and dance, and occupies an important part in the history of Chinese literature, traditional opera, music and dance.
On May 8, 2001, Kun Opera was listed by the UNESCO as a representative work of oral and intangible human heritages.
