Epidaurus Lyceum, the international summer school of ancient drama of Athens & Epidaurus Festival successfully completed Cycle A of studies with a workshop presentation at the Ancient Stadium of Epidaurus.
All Lyceum students participated in this presentation. A singular educational experiment on how to build a performance, focusing on the expression of the Chorus in ancient tragedy, the presentation was led by choreographer Patricia Apergi and the Aerites Dance Company.
In 2018, Epidaurus Lyceum’s programme of studies is divided into two cycles, under the thematic axis Polis (City) and the Citizen, with the participation of teachers and students from 23 countries, including USA, Russia, China, Turkey, Serbia, Mexico.
Throughout the programme, students attend a number of practical and theory workshops, lectures and masterclasses aiming at studying ancient drama on an experiential level through diverse aesthetic trends, methods and performing approaches.
The teaching staff of Cycle A consisted of: Maria Shmaevich, actress, director and biomechanics expert at the famous Russian Gitis Institute; Dennis Hilton-Reid, American director and acting coach; Lilo Baur, actress, director, and collaborator of Theatre de Complicité; Patricia Apergi, dancer and choreographer, and the Aerites Dance Company; Georgia Mavragani, director; Jonathan Pranlas-Decours, choreographer and member of Sine Qua Non ART; Edith Hall, professor of Classics at King’s College, Universty of London; Gong Baorong, vice president of Shanghai Theatre Academy; Maria Mikedaki, assistant professor at the Department of Theatre Studies, University of the Peloponnese; Angeliki Spiropoulou, assistant professor at the University of the Peloponnese and research fellow at the University of London, and Georgina Kakoudaki, Head of Epidaurus Lyceum and co-curator for educational programmes of Athens & Epidaurus Festival.
Cycle B is set to start on Wednesday, July 18. In 2018, Epidaurus Lyceum will be held between 2 and 16 July and will be themed around the axis Reinventing ancient drama and the contemporary stage.
Epidaurus Lyceum is realized under the auspices and support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and is a member of the International Network of Ancient Drama of the Ministry.
