Chilingirian Quartet

Numerous musicologists have suggested that Béla Bartόk (1881-1945) was influenced by Alban Berg’s Lyric Suite when writing his fourth string quartet, whose five movements are arranged in an ‘arch’ structure, meaning the first movement is thematically linked to the last, and the second to the fourth, leaving only the third – the keystone – unpaired.

The Chilingirian Quartet then performs The Hidden Treasure by John Tavener (b. 1944), the British composer known for his profoundly religious music, in which a journey is described from Paradise Lost to the Paradise Christ promised the repentant thief. The programme ends with the String Quartet no. 3 by another British composer, Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), whose creative power it encapsulates. [Ι.Μ.Τ.]
