ERT-National Symphonic Orchestra & Choir – The Athens Municipal Choir – Lukas Karytinos
Giuseppe Verdi, Requiem
Alessandro Manzoni, the celebrated Italian writer and supporter of Italian unification, died in Milan in 1873. A passionate admirer of his work, Verdi (1813-1901) honoured his passing with a requiem scored for large symphony orchestra, quartet of solo singers and double chorus. An inspired work, it was enthusiastically received despite reservations expressed by some about its operatic theatricality. The Requiem by Verdi, an agnostic, belongs to the same category of secular-style religious works as Berlioz’ Requiem and Brahms’ German Requiem.
