Grasshopper Theatre Co – Dimitris Karantzas

Henrik Ibsen, Little Eyolf

A newcomer at the Greek theatre, Dimitris Karantzas chose Little Eyolf (1894) to explore the effect of mechanistic routine in everyday life. A neglected work from Ibsen’s late period, Little Eyolf focuses on the depths of the human soul leaving overt social statement in the background. Spasmodic movements, mechanistic reactions and absolute immobility portray on stage the playwright’s caustically ironic opinion of his creations and reveal their (self-imposed) entrapment into social conventions and their own obsessions. Is there a way out?
