Esperanza Fernández, Savina Yannatou and Ali Ghorbani in Concert

The flamenco of Esperanza Fernández, the Greek songs of Savina Yannatou, and the Iranian traditions of Alireza Ghorbani meet here at a musical crossroads. This particular exploration of “The Art of the Song” started a few years ago with “The Rhythm of Speech” in the Near East, Africa and Southern Europe focuses on the Mediterranean basin, Iran and India. It is a meeting of men and women from different music traditions who take it in turns to play the roles of host and guest. Their joint music session is about the exchange of ideas rather than the absorption and effacement of difference. Indeed, it is a celebration of difference, as well as an opportunity to meet others, guided by the rhythms of flamenco, kathak and the Persian drums, and by modes of sung and metrical verse.
