Neuköllner Oper – The Beggars’ Operas

Yasou Aida!

The production that “catapults Aida into the year 2012” and won over the international Press at its Berlin premiere is coming to the Athens Festival. The changes to the classic opera’s music and dramatic thrust bring Aida into the contemporary era as a young Greek economist employed at the European Central Bank. This “friendly encounter’ between Greece and Germany explores the neo-colonial stereotypes that flourish in crisis-struck Europe, blurring in exemplary post-modern fashion the boundaries between composition and performance, tragedy and farce, classical and contemporary music theatre.

Co-production: Neuköllner Oper, “The Beggars’ Operas”, Thessaloniki Concert Hall.
The performances are made possible by the support of the Hellenic Ministry for Culture and Tourism (Free Theatre Fund, 2011-2012) and the German Embassy in Athens.
