Dimitris Basis
From Byzantium to the present
A journey through Greek music
A musical journey driven by the singing talents of Dimitris Basis, who takes us from the Byzantine past to the tones of Greece’s folk music, and from the by-ways of Greek popular song to works by the greatest Greek composers and contemporary songwriters. The songs are performed by a modest music ensemble (consisting of a piano, traditional stringed instruments, a cello, and vocals) that uniquely accentuates their timelessness, and brings their very essence to the fore. One musical period follows another in a programme that incorporates Byzantine hymns, Greek folk songs, and the popular urban songs of Smyrna and the rebetiko style, to reach the works of Theodorakis, Hadjidakis, Kaldaras, Plessas, Markopoulos, Loizos, and later songwriters. Dimitris Basis sings in his own, inimitable style.
