Pockemon Crew

C’ est ça la vie!?

How do children who devote themselves to hip hop view life? The work C’est ça la vie!? presents the views of the Lyon-based Pockemon Crew, who first performed on the streets, and then in the halls of the Lyon Opera before really hitting the big time: they were crowned French hip hop champions in 2003, and European champions in 2004. In this way, they have firmly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

Today, although years have passed since the first large-scale development of hip hop as a social and cultural phenomenon in the run-down suburbs of France’s major cities, the dance groups have grown in number, and hip hop has left the streets to take to the stage. In this case, eight dancers set against a backdrop of video projections tell their stories, and of their socio-political concerns, by means of incredibly skilled sets of movements. Rhythm, energy, flexibility and, above all, group spirit are the ingredients of the potent antidote they prescribe to the difficulties that surround us.

At the end of the performance, the Greek breakdance group Dead Prezz (Zerow, Psichik, Pangos, Tribal X, Lucky Look, Teo, Nako, and Big Ben) will be joining the Pockemon Crew in a short, freestyle appearance.

Pockemon Crew are artists in residence in the National Opera of Lyon, commissioned by the city of Lyon, the DRAC Rhône-Alpes and the region Rhône-Alpes.
