Red Bull Workshop

Running a Record Label

The Athens Festival educational programme returns for its second year with a series of seminars and workshops on theatre, dance and music. This particular workshop is being organised in collaboration with Synch, and examines the way in which a record label operates in relation to the music industry.

Instructors: Markus Detmer (Staubgold), Philippe Petit (BiP-HOp)

Over the last ten years there has been a steady increase in the number of independent record labels operating in the broader European region, and in the United States. The music industry is becoming more and more complex, while artists themselves are no longer considered “brands” unto themselves or fixed points of reference. This trend is perhaps most apparent in the contemporary independent (electronic) music production scene. New music styles spring up on an almost monthly basis, supported by record labels seeking to flag their musical sensibilities and, at the same time, to leave a distinctive mark on the immense international music map.

The aim of this seminar is to provide current and future music industry professionals, be they artists, producers, label managers, distributors or salespersons, with valuable information. The success of the high-profile labels Staubgold (Berlin) and BiP-HOp (Marseille) stands as a testimony to the skills and knowledge of the two speakers, Markus Detmer and Philippe Petit. During the course of the workshop they will cover various aspects of starting up and managing an independent record label with a series of lectures on the production of CDs, visual identity, distribution, Internet-only projects, concert promotion, copyright issues, and much more.
