Based on The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides A project directed by Roula Pateraki based on the classic work by Thucydides which narrates the events of the catastrophic war between Athens and Sparta (431-404 BC). The play is in three parts, and is expected to be performed over three consecutive festivals (2014-2016).
The first part, which will be performed this year, deals with the Peloponnesian war from the Athenian perspective. It centres on the work and character of the great Athenian general and statesman, Pericles, and culminates with the emblematic Funeral Oration he delivered amidst famine and chaos. The production seeks to transform a literary text into a theatrical action with a view to making it understandable to contemporary audiences. The main role will be played by Dimitris Lignadis, while a group of worthy collaborators will work on practical and theoretical aspects of this demanding project.
