Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui - Antony Gormley - Szymon Brzóska

Sutra

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s most recent work, Sutra, invites us on a journey inwards into the self. The international co-production grew out of the collaboration between Shaolin monks and the dancer and choreographer who, though still only 32 year-old, is already a key figure on the international dance scene. For Sutra, he also joined forces with the important British sculptor, Antony Gormley, and the talented Polish composer, Szymon Brzóska.

While Cherkaoui has always been fascinated by martial arts, this new work finds him delving deep into the Buddhist tradition which rejects the Western contradistinction between mind and body. The vehicle for his explorations: his dual cultural heritage (he is half Belgian and half Moroccan), innate curiosity and the constancy with which he fuses disparate material – voice, movement, gestures – in his spectacles [K.V].
