Socratis Socratous photographs Athens
2000 – 2010
This will be the first solo exhibition of Socratis Socratous’ photographs of Athens. It is a peculiar kind of diary, updated daily by the artist, who rounds up and captures moments. Portraits of strangers, well-known faces uncritically presented in front of his lens and examinations of socio-political issues — by turns unpleasant and traumatic, or pleasant and ceremonial — together form a mosaic that accurately reflects city life. This is not photo-journalism: Socratis’ eye is so personal and penetrating that it transcends the boundaries between photographer and subject.
