The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra
Concert
The concert is cancelled
The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (1984), featuring young musicians from around twenty Mediterranean countries, will appear in Athens under Milanese maestro Carlo Rizzi.
To begin with, they will perform the Introduction to Verdi’s Sicilian Vespers (1855), a work which created a powerful myth that had all the trappings of history and took on a national symbolism in Italy. Next on, is the Concerto for Orchestra (2007) by Serbian Ana Sokolović, whose compositions have been described by music critics as “a refined mix of rich Balkan millennia-old tradition and expressive avant-garde.” The concert will come to a close with Mahler’s Fourth Symphony (1899-1901), marvellously woven around the concluding song, “The Heavenly Life”, performed by the talented Chinese soprano, Ying Fang.
