A Tribute to Maurice Béjart

Tokyo Ballet – Sylvie Guillem – Laurent Hilaire, Manuel Legris (étoiles of the Paris Ballet)

The Athens Festival is honouring Maurice Béjart (1927-2007), a major personality in the dance world and a great friend of Greece.

He is the one who made dance popular, and we can say that thanks to him dance became the art of 20th century. A prolific and multifaceted artist who choreographed over 250 ballets over half a century, he loved dancers, his “source of inspiration and co-creators”, as he used to say, in key works like Le Sacre du Printemps, Firebird or Boléro. The Tokyo Ballet already had over 15 of his choreographies in its repertory in 1980. He is returning to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus with three soloists: Sylvie Guillem -one of his favourite dancers- and two étoiles of the Paris Ballet, Laurent Hilaire and Manuel Legris (K.V).
