Friedrich Schiller, Love and Intrigue

An aristocrat loves a commoner. She loves him back. But their love is doomed, crushed by the machinations of political intrigue. A clichéd tale? Perhaps, were the vagaries of power not dissected in so timely a manner. Schiller’s powerful linguistic constructs prescribe specific tones, rhythms and behaviours for each character. A 240-year-old “urbane tragedy”. A timeworn tale? Perhaps, but it is these very imperfections of old age that challenged the directors: two actors who have chosen the path of collaboration as a tool for the cultivation of creative and collective theatrical efforts.
